Mixing Mom and Dad’s Style

“Roll Tide”, the first phrase our friend has always tried to get our girls to say should give a clear indication that when it came to his own child the nursery theme was going to be elephants. In his mind the nursery would be full force Alabama, from the Crimson walls down to the Big Al bedding. Mom wanted that beautiful, soft nursery that was inviting for a little bitty one. So compromise had to happen but elephants remained. (Let’s be real compromise here means the pregnant woman got what she wanted because she’s growing a tiny person!)

When they found out they were having a boy colors became blue and navy. Bedding was picked and I could finally make their elephants.

I had made an elephant mobile before but to match the bedding for this nursery I had to tweak the ears a bit and lose the pattern I had put on my original elephants. Being able to customize ANY of my mobiles is one of the perks of buying a handmade item, it can be changed to better suite your own needs. And I love matching any bedding. Store bought bedding usually has the option for a matching mobile but the perk to mine is if you want to pull in another element or change up the decor just a little, I can make whatever you want!

The end result for the change in elephants is a mobile that matches the individual bedding in the colors needed. Basically exactly what mom wanted.

Customizing your own mobile

I love having my regular mobiles in my shop. The designs are beautiful and every time I make one I feel it’s better than the last but I always get so excited to make a custom mobile. I feel like the mobiles I offer in my shop cover an assortment of different nursery themes or can fit in to multiple gender neutral rooms. Customs though, fit into your life, your nursery, your idea of what your baby’s room should look like. We all spend way too much time on Pinterest now a days and I know that has raised our expectations of what the baby’s room should be like. We want soft yet beautiful, baby yet trendy and we want it to be perfect by the time that little bundle of joy arrives.

I’ve decorated 3 nurseries, 2 toddler rooms. All girls. And all were thought out and planned for months to make them perfect for my sweet girls. I’ve made a room with lime green walls and pink giraffes for my oldest. Then into an aqua blue mermaid room as she grew older. When my second girl came around I wanted purples to fill the space, with white birch trees and forest animals especially owls. Now she has a pink room but it has white picket fences on the walls and FILLED with owls because she fell in love with them. Their rooms were simple to me, they just felt right but with my third it took a lot more time to figure out what I wanted. Which really helped my figure out how custom rooms worked. I used something that I loved to make her room and I had myself and family members work on all the custom details that would go into it.

That’s how I start customers when they come to me and want a custom mobile. Some know exactly what they want and give me creative leeway to make their idea into a reality. I’ve made a lovely fairytale mobile with reference to Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Frog Prince, and Snow White. I’ve made a sports mobile for a UK fan complete with a Wildcat. Some customers just know they want a special addition to the room in the form of a custom mobile but don’t know exactly what they want on there. I start them thinking about the colors they want in the nursery. Then we’ll start talking about if they have a theme for the nursery or not, when people have a theme for the nursery it’s simple to narrow down a mobile. I add objects associated with the theme and make them in the color scheme of the nursery. If there is no theme, I start asking if there is an animal that means something special to the parents, or a place that has been important in their story so far. Once I get people thinking about what they have considered special or to have significant meaning in their life we start narrowing down what we can put on a mobile. I’ve made a travel mobile and most recently a beach themed mobile this way.

Sometimes once the ideas start coming to mind for the parents, they want too many things on one mobile. Here’s my tip for that, make a list of all the things you love and may want to showcase in your baby’s room and then narrow it down to things that go naturally together, I help people do this during the custom mobile process. That way the mobile keeps a theme to it and it won’t seem jumbled. This is exactly how the beach theme emerged for my customer, they had a list of an assortment of things they both loved and when they sent it to me I noticed there were several that were water themed. That allowed us to narrow it down to the water/beach type of items and then they could add different things they wanted on the mobile within the realm of beach.

Anytime you’re designing something have fun with it! This is especially true with your baby’s room, you need to fall in love with every detail of the room, make it a fun and beautiful place that you love being in. You’ll spend many nights rocking theme to sleep in that room and it needs to be a positive place for both you and your baby!

“The carousel never stops turning” – Ellis Grey

I’m obsessed with carousels. The hand carving and hand painting on the original carousels are mesmerizing to me, they symbolize to me the beauty that comes with hand made craftsmanship. I have this book, Painted Ponies, that I love flipping through to see the history of carousel art. It shows the transformation of the art from simple horse designs to elaborate exotic animals (My favorite being a Hippocamp, mythical fish tailed horse)

As I’ve grown in my mobile making, I now see the world as a mobile. Every time we go to the zoo I group animals together to see who would fit on a mobile together, I watch their behavior wondering what item I would put with them or what stance I would make them in. It makes for a fun (and jumbled) mindset. So for me I knew I wanted to make a carousel mobile because of my love for the turning animals and its perfect for a mobile because as us Grey’s Anatomy lovers know the carousel never stops turning. My ideas for a carousel mobile have varied in design and size but trying to actually make what I was envisioning was actually much more difficult than I assumed. There are so many designs of horses that carousel makers designed that vary from simple rose covered manes to elaborate armored stallions. Then there are lions, cats, bears, giraffes, etc. So picking just a couple to turn into felt was the most difficult part of the design for me. I still have plans to make different types of animals for my carousels but for now I have one design and I’m in love with it.

My first carousel mobile design has a basic horse design embellished with glitter felt and an armored type horse with a multi-colored tail. I’m excited to turn these carousel mobiles into regulars in my shop and I can’t wait to play with more designs for horses and more, maybe even a Hippocamp!

The Mobile that Started It All

When I got pregnant with our third child I spent a long time looking into nursery themes, probably the longest I spent on any of them. I looked at boy themes, dreaming of a viking nursery with blue hues and strong (but cuddly) Viking stuffies. I looked at girl themes, wondering how on Earth I was going to choose another girl nursery?!? When the day came that we found out we were having our third girl I still had no idea what nursery theme to choose.

I narrowed it down to three that I loved: Matroyshka dolls, Vintage hot air balloons, or a teal/coral tribal theme. I looked through Pinterest saving hundreds of pins, more in love with all the themes with every picture I found. I started looking through Etsy thinking that if I couldn’t find actual products in the themes AND colors I loved, then it would narrow the theme down for me. I was able to find things for each nursery theme, so I stayed in love with all three themes. I know it seems strange to get so invested in a nursery theme but this was our third and probably last child so I felt like I needed the “perfect” theme. Then one day I was given a beautiful handmade, crocheted blanket for our sweet girl and the color was a perfect match for one of the themes I had picked. I took it as a sign and finally settled on a nursery theme, Matroyshka dolls.

After the decision was made it was on to fabric, sheets, window treatments, wall decor, initials, but I couldn’t find a mobile I loved anywhere. No mobiles on Pinterest. No mobiles on Etsy. So I decided to make it, that way it would be exactly what I wanted, I could make it match her bedding and it would be a really special touch because I made it. I drew up my pattern, figured out the construction, and went to work.

When I was finished I was in love and her room was absolutely perfect.

After I figured out how to make mobiles I fell in love with the craft. I had friends start asking me if I could make mobiles for them and slowly it has turned into a fun business. Now I have mobiles hanging all over the world and it’s all because of these little Matroyshka dolls.

Baby List Registry

I found out about Baby List Registry from an Etsy customer and once I looked into it I fell in love with the idea. Basically if you’ve ever dreamed of being able to make a registry with everything you would ever want from any online shop you need Baby List Registry in your life.

Working Baby List Registry on a desktop:

Go to Baby List Registry and set up a list account.

Click on the ADD FROM THE WEB button the left side and add the Baby List button to your computers tool bar.

Or if you’re on your phone/tablet download the Baby List app.

***OR check out your favorite shops and sites, some of us have a special link on our page to send you to Baby List Registry and let you put our items on your list.***

Then you can add an item from ANY online store!! Oh my gosh this opens up so many possibilities for your baby list and as a mama of 3 I will tell you this is so much better than having to stick to the same store for all your needs. SO many individuals and small businesses have come up with new inventions, toys, designs that will make your life as a new parent go more smoothly but they aren’t selling to main stream stores yet and now you have a way to let your friends and family know all about these great products.

This new baby registry also allows you to decorate the nursery of your dreams from anywhere on the web since you can add items from Etsy or even individual small business’s web sites.

If you’re a soon to be mom, a sister of a soon to be mom, a best friend of a soon to be mom, or even a mom of a soon to be mom, check out Baby List Registry it will definitely change your wish list dreams.

I’m not affiliated with Baby List Registry, just a lover of their site.
