Decorations with no faces

In my mobiles I make several different animals and even a mermaid but very few of them I make with facial features. I make sure to add all the details necessary for each piece to look right but eyes, mouths, and noses tend to get left out. Why? Why leave out something so simple and what some might argue to be the cutest feature on some of these little guys. I do it to add a little more to each of my mobiles.

As babies grow with these faceless creatures so will their imagination. Without a face my creations can become anyone to kids, they get to decide if their eyes are blue or green or if their nose is long or short. They get to imagine exactly what they think a mermaid looks like not just what I think it looks like.

Every time I watch my 3 kids play together I’m amazed at the games and stories they come up to play. My older two will play shopping store where one is the customer and one works there, with the youngest being the baby in the stroller. They’ll play super hero or monsters and run around saving the world. Even my youngest will pretend to be a cat crawling around meowing. They blow me away with their creativity and I try to encourage that creative learning in every single piece I make.

So my little critters will for the most part stay faceless (and still adorable if I do say so myself) and all those sweet little ones will keep making up amazing, beautiful stories.

I’m a BIG Gilmore Girls fan like stayed up all night after Thanksgiving to watch the revival, named my daughter Lorelai type of fan. And what Gilmore Girls fan doesn’t love Lorelai’s house? The vintage kitchen, charming decor, and that wrap around porch!!!! That amazing porch always had a beautiful vine of wisteria blooming above it, constantly adding even more to the Gilmore’s lives.

I love that vine. I love that most of the year it’s just an over taking beast in simple green but once the time is right it blooms into the most magnificent flower vine you can find. The entrance to my dad’s neighborhood gets covered in wisteria when the time is right and it always makes me smile to drive down the road and see that the forest is covered in purple again. I always want to go in a cut out some to grow on my back pergola but since I never seem to find the right time to do it, I did something better. I made a wisteria mobile. Felt is always better anyway, right?

Just think wisteria you can add to not only a nursery but any room you need a bright bloom. Wisteria that you don’t have to enjoy for just a short time at peak season but that stays the perfect shades of purple all year round.

It fits in perfectly to any shabby chic nursery and can grow into a ceiling hanging or chandelier piece for a big kid’s room! I made the original in 2 shades of purple with light green leaves to represent the vine. I made this mobile in a 10in circle and the blooms hang all along the outside of the hoop.

After I made the original in purple I really wanted to add a pink option to my shop. Benzie Design has this amazing Mulberry color that I’m always trying to fit into new mobiles and I thought a pink wisteria mobile was a perfect place for it.

These mobiles have turned out to be one of my favorite products offered in my shop. I also have a couple of these mobiles hanging in a shop in Georgetown, Ky called The Georgetown Makery it’s an amazing little shop that features a bunch of different products by Etsy sellers!

Space, the final frontier, the place where dreamers go and adventurers want to go.

In my house we’re star gazers and because of it we’ve created 3 little girls who love the idea of space. My oldest goes between an astronaut, fashion designer, or Bob Ross as who she wants to be when she grows up. I encourage moon watching and star gazing in this house, it keeps the little’s curiosity growing and their brains thinking of all the possibilities out there past just our world. So when I got the chance to make a space mobile I couldn’t hold in my excitement!

The customer wanted a rocket ship and planets but left the color choices and design up to me. As a space lover (and a bit OCD) I wanted to make the planets close to actual satellite photos that NASA has taken. I chose the planets to include based on the colors of the planets and which ones would go together best but would also add a lot of color to the piece. I ended up picking the moon, Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn. Then I just kept the rocket ship simple with bright colors and placed it in the middle with the moon.

Mercury’s NASA photo has these beautiful gold flashes coursing all over it that I just fell in love with and I wanted that bright, shiny coloring to be brought into the mobile. I used The Felt Pod’s gold metallic tinsel felt, it’s one of my favorite products to use and I always choose this felt when adding gold to a mobile! (Click on the name to check it out for yourself). I also used this gold for two of the stars to give them a special shimmer.

For Earth and made the major continents out of hunter green and different shades of brown and my intention was to needle felt white wisps onto both sides but once I had the two sides made I didn’t want to jumble the piece up with more detailing.

Saturn and Jupiter I kept simple with layers of different colors. I did give them their classic markings of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot and Saturn’s rings.

I hope this mobile keeps it’s little one dreaming of deep space adventures filled with new planets (and maybe new people!!).
